The role of UNICEF

UNICEF, which was already in Syria and throughout the region before the outbreak of the conflict, in collaboration with various partners in the field, has been providing humanitarian aid within Syria and neighboring countries hosting more than 5 million refugees.

Saving lives and reducing the impact of war on children and their families is the goal of UNICEF action. In this regard, health care, vaccination, nutrition and access to safe drinking water and sanitation as well as education have been a priority.

In July 2017, in Syria, UNICEF was able to reach 481,000 people in difficult access areas with essential water, hygiene& sanitation services, education, health & nutrition, child protection, among others. UNICEF field teams distributed basic necessities to 23,350 people in fenced-in areas. In the same period, more than 65,000 children benefited from education services, including about 36,000 in areas of difficult access. In addition, with UNICEF support, an additional 40,000 children had access to formal education and about 8,000 non-formal education across the country. The recovery of 251 classrooms allowed another 13,200 children to return to school. In July, more than 421,000 children and women were covered by health services in 110 units across the country. In the second half of that month, 259,950 children under the age of five were vaccinated against polio in collaboration with WHO following an outbreak of the disease in the country.

UNICEF is also supporting vulnerable families and children through the distribution of non-food items such as clothing. Later that month, more than 49,000 children received psychological support to help them overcome traumas caused by the violence they witnessed.
